Recount is a political drama reliving the fierce battle between Bush and Gore over Florida’s votes, which decided the U.S. Presidential Election of 2000. On first look it may seem like a typical movie about political affairs but in this case the audience is not just presented with the expected political facades but provided with a so called behind the scenes portrayal of the actual clockwork of political decision making. In this movie the struggle is not about Bush or Gore themselves but rather a focus on the political teams standing behind each of them. And the way the events were recreated and reenacted with a mix of real news footages was as if it was an actual documentary.

The acting performances were matched well with the theme and style of the movie. The human factors such as anger, frustration, desperation, agendas, and motives were all portrayed through authentic and colorful acting. One of the themes that was presented through Kevin Spacey’s role as one of the main political advisors was that going beyond partisan rivalry, democracy is not about who wins but by what means one wins. In many ways this is what the audience is left with in the end.

I don’t know about you but I cannot help but wish for both the U.S.’s and the world’s sake that Al Gore not Bush had won the election. Eight years ago that was a sensible position to have and now in hindsight much more so and Bush’s approval rate among Americans is a testimony to a wider recognition of this reality. Recently I saw a few CNN news reporters discuss the difficulty Al Gore had with being perceived as overly intellectual and then it spilled over to Obama having similar difficulties. This for me begs the question who would want an average person to run a country when the problems they will be faced with are extraordinarily difficult to manage? I think the lesson to be learned is that while anyone may aspire to become President, it shouldn’t be that the President could be anyone.

But enough about politics. Feel free to share your views on how you liked the movie and if you haven’t seen it yet you can get Recount from Amazon anytime and you can watch a discussion about it between Kevin Spacey, Jeffrey Toobin, & David Boies on Charlie Rose.
